Light Rays Flashcards
What happens when the ray enters the block at 90°
It carries straight on/straight ahead. The light slows down
What happens when the rays enters the block at any others angle.
It bends/refract. If it enters at any other angle it changes directions on entry or exist. Slow down. it carries on straight on without changing direction. The light does slow down.
What happens when the ray comes out of the block at 90°
It carries straight on. Slows down
What happens when the ray comes out of the block at any other angle
It bends back again to the same angle it went in at. Speeds up.
Compare the direction of the ray entering the block with the direction of the ray emerging from the opposite side.
They are parallel but no longer in line with each other speeds up.
Refraction occurs when a wave moves from one medium to a different medium and changes speed.
When light moves from air to glass it slows down
# When light moves from glass to air it speeds up
# Light will not bend when it enters a different material at 90°
What do you notice about the laser beam as it enters the water
It bends
Does it bend towards or away from the imaginary normal line (90° to the surface)?
Towards
Give an example of an animal who would need to understand refraction to live and explain why
Archers fish, fish diving birds
