Electricity Flashcards
What is current
It measures the number of electrons through wire per second. The bigger the wire the more electrons can flow through it . Current is measured in amperes or Amps (A)
What is voltage
The amount of pressure pushing electrons through a wire. The more voltage the higher the energy available is the push the electron through a wire voltage is measured in Volts (V)
What is power
It measures the amount of work done by electricity. The higher the voltage and current the more power available. It’s measured in watts (w)
Current in a series circuit
Same all the way around
What do resistors do
Reduce the current. They are friction in a circuit
Voltage in a series circuit
Voltage from the battery is divided between the components in a series circuit
Current in a parallel circuit
At a junction the current splits . All loops should add up to the current from the battery
Current series and parallel circuit
Parallel
The current in the Branches of this circuit add ho it the supply current . 1total=I1+I2
Series
The current is the same at all points in the circuit
Resistor in series and parallel circuit
Series
Adding a resistor increases total resistance bc electric change has to pass another component
Parallel
Adding a resistor would decrease total resistance bc you are providing an alternate path for the electric charge
The restiarance in a series circuit and a parallel circuit
Parallel-
Total resistance value is always less than smallest individual resistor increases a combination
Series-
The total resistance, of a number of resistors, in the circuit = to the sum of all individual resistances
R total = R1+R2
Voltqge and potential difference in circuits
Parallel
When resistors are connected they have rhe same potential difference across them
Series-
The potential difference around the circuit adds up to the total difference of the supply
What does the diode do
Only allows current to flow in one direction
LDR
The resistance changes when the light level changes
Bright=low resistance
Low= high resistance
Bulb
Changes electrical energy into light energy
Cell and battery
Provides electrical energy for the circuit
Resistor
A component which limits the amount of current flowing in a circuit
Variable resistor
The resistance can be changed
LED
verg energy deficient light source
How are volts or Amps connected in
Amps in series and volts in a parralel
What is resistance measured in
Ohms
Triangle for solving voltage , current or resistance
V=IR
V
I R
current symbol is I
Charge and current triangle
Q=IT
Q
I T
Q = charge coulombs c
I= current in amperes A
T= time in seconds S
Non renewable energy resources
They will eventually run our and can’t be replaced
E.g oil, coal , gas , nuclear
Renewable resources
These are inexhaustible and will not run out (solar) or can be replaced quickly (wood)
E.g wind , solar , hydro , tidal
