Electricity Flashcards

1
Q

What is current

A

It measures the number of electrons through wire per second. The bigger the wire the more electrons can flow through it . Current is measured in amperes or Amps (A)

Q

What is voltage

A

The amount of pressure pushing electrons through a wire. The more voltage the higher the energy available is the push the electron through a wire voltage is measured in Volts (V)

What is power

A

It measures the amount of work done by electricity. The higher the voltage and current the more power available. It’s measured in watts (w)

Q

Current in a parallel circuit

A

At a junction the current splits . All loops should add up to the current from the battery

Q

Current series and parallel circuit

A

Parallel
The current in the Branches of this circuit add ho it the supply current . 1total=I1+I2
Series
The current is the same at all points in the circuit

Q

Resistor in series and parallel circuit

A

Series
Adding a resistor increases total resistance bc electric change has to pass another component
Parallel
Adding a resistor would decrease total resistance bc you are providing an alternate path for the electric charge

Q

The restiarance in a series circuit and a parallel circuit

A

Parallel-
Total resistance value is always less than smallest individual resistor increases a combination
Series-
The total resistance, of a number of resistors, in the circuit = to the sum of all individual resistances
R total = R1+R2

Q

Voltqge and potential difference in circuits

A

Parallel
When resistors are connected they have rhe same potential difference across them
Series-
The potential difference around the circuit adds up to the total difference of the supply

23
Q

Non renewable energy resources

A

They will eventually run our and can’t be replaced
E.g oil, coal , gas , nuclear

24
Q

Renewable resources

A

These are inexhaustible and will not run out (solar) or can be replaced quickly (wood)
E.g wind , solar , hydro , tidal

25
How is coal formed
Coal is formed from dead plants that have been buried in mud for billions of years It first forms peat Then the peat turns into coal over as water and air is squeezed out . The air and water is squeezed out by all the pressure from rock and dirt building on top
26
27
Oil is formed by
The remains of plankton (small animals) that lived in the sea millions of years ago The dead plankton is covered by mud on the sea floor and then slowly changes into oil between the rock, this happens because if heat and microbes
28
29
How is natural gas found
Underground often in the same place as oil Natural gas is from a mixture of gases It’d mainly made from methane gas

What is the energy flow diagram for a steam turnbine
Chemical- fuel Heat -furnace Kinetic -turbine Electrical -generator
38
What happens in a steam diagram
Fuel is burned to boil water at a high pressure The boiling water produces superheated steam The superheated steam turns rhe turbine The turbine rotates a magnet in the generates electricity
