light and sound Flashcards
1
Q
Light is:
A
- A transverse wave
- can be reflected and refracted
2
Q
Investigate refractive index
A
- Shine light ray through the glass block
- Use crosses to mark the path of the ray
- Join up crosses with a ruler
- Draw on a normal where the ray enters the glass block
- Measure the angle of incidence and angle of refraction.
- Repeat for different angles, plot on table, calculate refractive index and find avg.
3
Q
TIR
A
- I > c
- used to transmit signals along optical fibres
4
Q
Sound waves
A
- are longitudinal waves which can be reflected and refracted
5
Q
Hertz
A
- humans hear 20-20k hz
6
Q
Oscilloscope and mic displays sound waves
A
- plug mic into oscilloscope
- sound will transfer into an electrical signal which the oscilloscope can display
→ greater amplitude = more energy
→ more energy = louder - frequency low means pitch low + vice versa
