Light Flashcards
When dose light bend and why?
Light bends when travelling through different mediums. It bends because it changes speed.
When does light travel fastest?
In a vacuum
When does light travel slowest?
In optically denser materials, like glass, water and air.
How do lenses work?
Their curved surface refracts the light and bends it.
What lens brings light to a focus?
Convex/converging lens
What lens spreads out light?
Concave/diverging lens
What can white light be split into?
The colours of the rainbow 🌈 ROY.G BIV
How do we split up the white light and what is it called?
We split the white light by refracting it through a prism. This is called dispersion.
Why does dispersion occur?
Because violet slows down more and bends more than red light.
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
The spectrum of light.
What is the order of the EM spectrum?
Gamma, X-Ray, Ultraviolet, Visible, infared, microwaves, radio.
What are the properties of gamma rays?
Passes through skin and tissue, some can be absorbed by cells, kills bacteria and used to detect cancer.
Can cause cancer.
What are the properties of X-Ray?
Passes through skin and tissue. Detects bones and teeth.
Can cause cancer.
What are the properties of UV light?
It is in sunlight.
Can cause sunburn and cancer
What are the properties of visible light?
All visible
What are the properties of infared light?
Felt as heat
In TV remote controls
Used to keep us warm.
Properties of microwave?
Transmits phone signals
Used to cook food and give heat.
Properties of radio waves?
Longest waves so they are used to transmit radio and TV shows.
Radio signal can be reflected around the world
What are transverse waves?
When the particles vibrate in perpendicular direction to the direction of the wave energy is travelling in.
What are longitudinal waves?
The particles vibrate parallel to the direction of the wave energy motion.
What 3 properties does every EM wave have?
Are transverse waves
Can travel in a vacuum
Travel at 300,000,000 m/s in a vacuum.
