Ligaments of the Knee Flashcards
What are the structures of each layer in the lateral side of the knee?
Layer 1: biceps femoris, IT band Common peroneal nerve Layer 2: LPFL Layer 3 (superficial): LCL Lateral geniciulate artery Layer 3 (deep): popliteus tendon, popliteofibular ligament, coronary ligament, capsule
What are the structures of each layer in the medial side of the knee?
Layer 1: sartoroius fascia
Gracilis, semitendinosus and saphenous nerve
Layer 2: superficial MCL, semimembranosous, posterior oblique ligament
Layer 3: deep MCL, capsule, coronary ligament
What are the two bundles of the ACL?
Anteromedial: tight in flexion
Posterolateral: tight in extension; prevents pivot shift
Anteromedial bundle inserts anterior to posterolateral bundle on the tibia and is longer
What are the tensile strengths of the native ACL and various reconstructions?
native ACL 2200 N
BPTB 3000N
quadrupled hamstring 4000N
What are the two bundles of the PCL?
Anterolateral: tight in flexion
Posteromedial: tight in extension
Where do the PCL and ACL originate?
ACL: LFC
PCL: MFC
What is the relationship of the LCL and the popliteus?
1) LCL originates posterior and proximal to popliteus
2) LCL is superficial to popliteus
3) LCL inserts on fibular head, anterior to politeofibular ligament
What are the components of the posterolateral corner of the knee?
1) LCL
2) Popliteus muscle
3) Popliteofibular ligament
4) Arcuate ligament
5) Lateral capsule
Where does the MCL originate and insert?
Origin: Just posterior to the medial epicondyle
Insertion: periosteum of the the tibia, deep to pes anserinus
Where does the MPFL originate?
Anteroinferior to the adductor tubercle, posterosuperior to the medial epicondyle at the Shottle point
What are the components of the posteromedial corner?
1) insertion of semimembranosus
2) posterior oblique ligament; resists tibial internal rotation in full extension
3) oblique popliteal ligament
4) posterior capsule
