Ligaments of the Glenohumeral Joint Flashcards
Shape and DoF: superior glenohumeral ligament
slender ligament
runs laterally - parallel to tendon of long head of biceps
on the anterior joint
Shape and DoF: middle glenohumeral ligament
runs laterally
on anterior joint
below but continuous with superior GH ligamnet
Shape and DoF: inferior glenohumeral ligament
runs laterally on anterior joint
well developed ligament
forms a sling under head of humerus
Shape and DoF: coracohumeral ligament
strong broad band
runs laterally to become flattened
Shape and DoF: coracoacromial ligament
strong, triangular ligament
anterior and posterior borders are thicker than the intermediate part
Attachments: superior glenohumeral ligament
from upper part of glenoid margin and adjacent labrum (anterior to tendon of long head of biceps)
to upper surface of lesser tubercle
Attachments: middle glenohumeral ligament
bellow superior ligament on upper glenoid margin and labrum
to humerus on front of lesser tubercle - below insertion of subscapularis
Attachments: inferior glenohumeral ligament
from glenoid margin (below the notch) & anterior border of glenoid labrum
to anterioinferior part of anatomical neck humerus
Attachments: transverse humeral ligament
at the upper end of intertuberclar groove
bridges the gap between greater and lesser tubercles
Attachments: coracohumeral ligament
from lateral border of coracoid process
Anterior band blends with JC
Posterior band blends with supraspinatus tendon - attaching to UPPER facet of GREATER tubercle
Attachments: coracoacromial ligament
broad base from lateral border of coracoid process
blunt apex attaches to apex of acromion - anterior to AC joint
Function: Glenohumeral ligaments
reinforce the anterior joint capsule
taut in lateral rotation
middle and inferior ligaments taut in abduction
Function: transverse humeral ligament
holds the biceps tendon in the intertubecular groove to prevent bow stringing
Function: coracohumeral ligament
blends with the joint capsule - takes the weight of the arm, inferior JC support
holds down the long head of biceps - stops the superior migration of HoH
Function: coracoacromial ligament
Forms the fibroosseous arch - limits superior displacement
increases SA for head of humerus in glenoid when upwards force along humerus
