Ligaments of the ankle Flashcards
What is a ligament?
A tough inelastic structure that connects bone to bone
What three categories are the ligaments of the ankle divided into?
The medial ligaments
The lateral ligaments
The posterior ligaments
What are the medial ligaments?
The deltoid (or talocrural) ligament made up of four ligaments: The posterior tibiotalur ligament The anterior tibiotalur ligament The tibiocalcaneal ligament Tibionavicular ligament
Where does the posterior tibiotalar ligament run between?
The posterior border of the medial malleolus backwards and laterally to the inner side of the talus
Where does the tibionavicular ligament run between?
From the medial malleolus to the tuberosity of the navicular bone
Where does the tibiocalcaneal ligament run between?
Almost vertically straight down from the medial malleolus to the calcaneus
Where does the anterior tibiotalar ligament run between?
The anterio-inferior part of the medial malleolus and the anterio-superior talus
How many lateral ligaments are there?
Three
What are the names of the lateral ligaments?
Anterior talofibular ligament
Posterior talofibular ligament
Calcaneofibular ligament
Where does the posterior talofibular ligament run between?
The posterior lateral malleolus backwards to the posterior talus
Where does the anterior talofibular ligament run between?
The anterior lateral malleolus anterio-medially to the talus
Which is the most commonly injured ligament of the ankle?
The anterior talofibular ligament
Where does the calcaneofibular ligament run between?
The apex of the lateral malleolus posterio-inferiorly to the lateral surface of the calcaneous
How many posterior ligaments of the ankle are there?
Two
What are the posterior ankle ligaments called?
The posterior tibiofibular ligament and the transverse tibiofibular ligament
