Ligaments Flashcards
Anterior Longitudinal Ligament
> Bonds to anterior aspects of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs from C2-Sacrum
Limits extension
Posterior Longitudinal Ligament
> Bonds to posterior aspect of vertebral bodies and intervertebral discs from C2-Sacrum
Limits Flexion
Ligamentum Flavum
> Between lamina of adjacent vertebrae, runs from C2 to sacrum
limits flexion + rotation
Interspinous Ligament
> Between adjacent spinous processes, runs from C1 to sacrum (thinner and longer in thoracic spine)
limits flexion
Supraspinous ligament
> Between tips of adjacent spinous processes, from C7 where blends with ligamentum nuchae to sacrum (more pronounced in lumbar region)
Limits flexion
Intertransverse ligament
> Between adjacent transverse processes (mostly muscular in cervical spine)
Limit side flexion
Radiate ligament of head of rib
> from crest between facets on rib head to intervertebral disc and 2 vertebral bodies
supports the costovertebral joint
Costotransverse ligament
> neck of rib to transverse process
> supporting costotransverse joint
Lateral costotransverse ligament
> non-articular aspect of tubercle of rib to tip of transverse process
supports costotransverse joint
Superior costotransverse ligament
> upper border of neck of rib to transverse process of vertebra above it
