Ligament injuries Flashcards
What are ligaments?
Dense bands of collagenous tissue (condensations capsule)
What is the role of ligaments?
Joint stability through range of motion
What are ligaments anchored to?
They span a joint and are anchored to bone
Ligament versus tendons - Collagen content?
> Both collagen type 1
Ligament have less collagen than tendon as a percentage
Ligaments have less organised collagen fibres
Ligament versus tendons - proteoglycans and water content?
Higher percentage of proteoglycans and water in ligaments
Why do ligaments crimple?
To allow stretch
What types of sensory fibres are present in ligament structures?
> Proprioception
Stretch
Sensory
When do ligaments rupture?
Forces exceed strength ligament:
> Expected
> Unexpected (position/muscle)
> Rate load
Healing of a ligament rupture?
1) Inflammation/Haemorrhage
2) Proliferative stage
3) Remodelling
Treatment in ligament rupture?
Conservative:
> Partial
> No instability
> Poor candidate surgery
Operative:
> Instability
> Expectation (sportsmen)
> Compulsory (multiple)
