Ligament Growth & Repair Flashcards
1
Q
What makes up a ligament?
A
- Type 1 Collagen
- fibroblasts
- sensory fibres
- vessels
- Crimpling
2
Q
What are the stages of a ligament healing?
A
1) Haemorrhage - Blood clot, cellular infiltrate and a hypertrophic vascular response
2) Proliferative - Disorganised collagen (Scar Tissue)
3) Remodelling - Matrix becomes ligament like
3
Q
What ligament ruptures would we handle conservatively?
A
- Partial ruptures
- No joint instability
- Unsuitable for surgery
4
Q
When would we handle a ligament rupture surgically?
A
- Instability
- Expectation e.g. sportsmen
- Multiple ruptures
5
Q
What methods of rupture surgery are there?
A
- Repair (basically stitching it back together)
- Augmentation
- Replacement
6
Q
compare it’s composition to tendons?
A
- Less collagen than tendons
- More proteoglycans & water
- Less organized collagen
- Rounder fibroblasts
7
Q
What is a ligament?
A
A band of collagenous tissue which spans a joint and is connected to bone on either side.
Joint stability is achieved via a range of mobility.
