Fines issued to vagabonds as well as cruel punishments like whipping.
When was the Elizabeth poor law passed?
1601
What did the statute of artificers do to help the poor?
Made the government responsible for the poor. Lasted for 200 years.

First in 1576 and adapted and improved in 1598

Begging was forbidden, this meant that poverty and civil unrest were greatly reduced.

It did mean that peasants were less likely to revolt, but generally poverty got worse.
