Lifestyle Chemistry: Terminology Flashcards
What is a solution?
A solution is a mixture that contains at least one substance dissolved within another.
What is a colloid?
A colloid is a mixture of two substances that do not usually mix.
What is a suspension?
A mixture in which particles of one substance are suspended in the other.
What is matter?
All matter is made up of particles. The 3 states of matter include solids, liquids and gases.
What is surface tension?
Surface tension is the force that acts at the surface of water, in which the bond between the water particles is stronger because they do not bond with with air particles.
What are emulsions?
Emulsions are a liquid in liquid colloid containing two substances which normally do not mix or dissolve in each other.
What are phases?
Phases refer to the two substances in an emulsion that do not normally mix.
What are emulsifiers?
Emulsifiers are substances that help one substance mix with another.
What is a surfactant?
Surfactants are surface acting agents.
What is biodegradability?
The ability of a substance to be broken down by living organisms such as microorganisms and bacteria.
What is the purpose of the pH scale?
The pH scale is used to determine the acidity of substances, ranging between 0 and 14, 7 being neutral, anything below 7 is considered to be acidic, and anything above is considered to be alkaline (or base).
What are sebaceous glands?
Sebaceous glands are microscopic glands that secrete oily and waxy matter.
What is the epidermis?
The epidermis is the layer of cells growing and continuously moving upwards to replace those above.
What is digestion?
Digestion is the process by which our bodies break down food into smaller molecules.
