lifecycle adaption Flashcards
Describe the annual lifecycle of a typical herbaceous perennial.
- Herbaceous perennials have a cyclical live cycle:
-New growth above ground appears in spring, Flower/Foliage display in summer and seed establishment.
-Die back in Autumn. Dormant in Winter.
- This cycle starts all over in spring.
What are the two differences between shrubs and trees
Trees have one stem from the ground and develop branches/foliage at height.
Shrubs have multi-stem growth from the ground.
What might be TWO advantages of growing annuals in a garden?
Annuals are easy to grow and a budget friendly option.
They also deliver lots of flowers and have a long flowering season.
What are some of the implications of combining plants with different lifespans on the maintenance of a garden.
Woody perennials - trees/shrubs: generally speaking low maintenance. They deliver all year interest to a garden, either by being evergreen or having an interesting structure.
Herbaceous Perennials: they need cutting back and dead heading to prolong flowering season. However they are going to add a display year after year.
Annuals: They have a long flowering period and they might self-seed, but you are not going to have the same display the following year and you might need to re-seed. Very useful when you start a garden and want to add colour in the first year.
