Internal Parts of plants Flashcards

1
Q

Describe THREE characteristics for TWO named transport tissues to be found in plant stems.

A

Xylem:
Forms tubes with hard walled cells. Made out of lignin. Needs to be able to hold the pressure of transporting water up for meters in some plants.
Transport is passive.
Movement: transports water down the plant. Uni-directional movement.

Phloem:
Physical structure: made out of soft walled cells.
Transport is active. Cells are involved in chemicals processes for which they need to be alive.
Movement: Mostly down the plant. There are some cases where it also transports liquids up the plant. Bi-directional movement.

Q

What is cambium? Name one place where it might be found in a plant.

A

It’s between xylem and phloem and is typically found not only in the outer parts of stems.

Cambium is a plant tissue that does grow new cells. It is a specialized tissue that allows a plant parts to grow wider. It can be found in the root of a plant.

Q

What role do the two types of vascular tissues play in the life of a plant?

A

Xylem transports water up through the plant: from the root of the plant through the stem and to the leaves.

Phloem transports nutrients (sugars, amino acids, secondary metabolites) down the plant. From the leaves to where it is needed to grow new parts. In some cases, it also transports liquids down the plant.

the results of transporting the materials as mentioned, need to be mentioned, which is to enable chemical processes to facilitate plant growth.

Q
  1. Why does a knowledge of where cambium is in a plant help us to plan propagation?
A

If you know that a plant has cambium in the stem, that allows you to take a cutting (form of propagation). Cambium is a plant tissue that grows new cells and facilitates the growth of the cutting.

Most eudicotyledons do have cambium in the stem and can be used for cuttings. That is not the case for monocotyledons.

The knowledge enables you to select the correct plant material for propagation,
