What is human growth?
An increase in some measured quantities such as height or weight.
What is life expectancy?
A statistical measure of how long a person is expected to live
What is life span?
How long a person lives
What is a milestone?
An ability achieve at a certain age that is measurable.
What is gestation?
Gestation is the nine-month period during which the baby grows in the womb.
Why do newborn babies have innate reflexes?
To allow the baby to feed, move and survive during infancy.
What can be seen with the moro/startle reflex?
When startled a newborn baby throws out its arms and legs then pulls them back again and grimaces.
What can be seen with the grasping reflex?
A newborn baby will grasp an object placed in his hand similar “grasping” action can be seen with the toes, if you stroke the sole of the baby’s foot.
What can be seen with the hand-to-mouth reflex?
A newborn baby will bring an object to his mouth and begin to suck it.
What can be seen with the rooting reflex?
When you touch a newborn baby’s cheek, he will turn his head in the direction of the touch, the reflex helps the baby find his mother’s nipple or a bottle.
What can be seen with the crawling reflex?
A newborn baby hovered face down near a surface will show crawling movements.
What can be seen with the stepping reflex?
If you hold a newborn baby upright with his feet touching the ground, he will make stepping movements.
What are gross motor skills?
Skills that involve the use of large muscles in the body.
What are some examples of gross motor skills?
- turning head
- rolling over
- kicking
- leaning forwards
- sitting up
- crawling
- standing up
- climbing onto furniture
What are locomotor/locomotive skills used for?
Used for moving around like crawling, walking and running.
They are gross motor skills
How do infants develop there gross motor skills?
From the head down
What are a infants gross motor skills at 6 months?
Infants will gradually control muscles in their neck and back so they can roll, sit and crawl
What are a infants gross motor skills at 11-13 months?
Muscles in the legs develop so they can stand, cruise and walk.
What are fine motor skills?
Fine motor skills use the small muscles in our hands and fingers.
What are a infants fine motor skills when they are a newborn?
Able to grasp an adults finger.
What are a infants fine motor skills at 3 months?
Will be able to hold a rattle for a short time.
What are a infants fine motor skills at 6 months?
He will be able to grasp a toy and pass it from one hand to the other
What are a infants fine motor skills at 12 months?
He will pick up small objects using a pincer grasp.
What are a infants fine motor skills at 18 months?
They can build with small blocks and use a spoon as well as make marks with a crayon using a palmar grasp.

They will pull on their own shoes and control their crayon to draw circles and dots.

Developing a tripod grasp, can use a fork and spoon, turn the pages of a book and button and unbutton clothing.

Will be able to thread small beads and colour pictures

Can control the muscles in their fingers to manipulate the construction block and used hand-eye coordination to fit the piece into the correct place.
Will also be able to to write her own name forming letters correctly.
