Life science T1 Cells Flashcards
Differences between plant and animal cells
.plants have large vacuoles
while animals have small or vacuoles or none
.plants cells have chloroplast animal cells don’t photosynthesis
.plant cell has cell wall animal doesnt
.plant cells dont have centrioles animal cells do
Centrioles function
Involved in making the spindle during cell division
Where are eukaryotic cell
cells found in animals, plants, fungi and protists (algi)
Where are prokarytoic cells found
Bacteria
what is a protoplasm
protoplasm= cytoplasm + nucleus
Cell wall function
made of cellulose, gives the cell structure and is impermable
What is cell membrane made off?
two types of molecules:phospholipids and proteins
cell membrae function
a semi-permable substance that allows specific things to move and others not in and out the cell
what is a phospholipid
special fat like molecules with a distinct head and tail region, head is said to be hydrophilic and tail hydrophobic
diffusion definition
The movement of particles of a substance from where they are in an area of high concentration too low concentration
osmosis definition
the movement of water through a semi permable membrane from a weak solution to a strong solution
active transport def
A movement involving some protein molecules and extra energy usually transporting substances in the opposite direction of diffusion or the movement of large molecules
endocytosis def
process in which larger molecules are taken into cell from outside
endocytosis process
cell membrane folds inwards to form a flask like depression in which molecules collect, the neck of the flask then seals off leaving the substances in a vesicle inside the cell
phagcytosis def
special form of endocytosis which means cell eating
phagcytosis process
membrane flows around large molecule or even a small organism engulfing it it into food vacuoles and ezymes digest material in the vacuole
exoctyosis def
reverse of endocytosis a way in which cell can expel large substances through cell membrane
pinocytosis
membrane folds inwards pinching off fluid into vesicles
exocytosis process
pinocytosis def
This literally means cell drinking special form of endocytosis
function of cytoplasm
jelly like liquid that fills the cell
rough endoplasmic reticulum function
transport network carrying ribosomes and transporting them around cell
smooth endoplasmic reticulum function
lacks ribosomes but produces lipids and steroids
