IT Theory 1 Flashcards
What is a motherboard?
A motherboard is the main printed circuit board (PCB) in a computer. The motherboard is a computer’s central communications backbone connectivity point, through which all components and external peripherals connect.
Which components are connected to the motherboard?
The components that connect through them include chipsets, central processing units (CPU) and memory. The external peripherals include Wi-Fi, Ethernet and graphics cards with the graphics processing unit, or GPU.
What does the ALU do?
- The ALU performs simple addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and logic operations
Name the three parts of a CPU?
arithmatic logic unit (ALU), control unit (CU), and memory unit.
What is a register?
- In computer science, a register is an important component of digital devices that stores data and instructions for quick processing. It serves as a temporary storage area where information can be accessed and manipulated quickly in order to carry out complex tasks.
Where are registers situated?
built directly into the processor or CPU (Central Processing Unit)
What is the purpose of a BIOS?
BIOS (basic input/output system) is the program a computer’s microprocessor uses to start the computer system after it is powered on.
Main difference between SSD AND HDD?
Solid state drives (SSD) and hard disk drives (HDD) are data storage devices. SSDs store data in flash memory, while HDDs store data in magnetic disks
Why is the motherboard linked directly to the CPU and not hard drive?
. The motherboard frequently includes data and power connectors, capacitors, heat sinks, and fans. It holds each component together and allows them to communicate with one another. For example, CPUs, GPUs, and hard drives cannot interact or communicate with each other unless the user connects them to the motherboard
Three reasons why SSD is more efficient then HDD?
SDs are a newer technology that uses silicon’s physical and chemical properties to offer more storage volume, speed, and efficiency
What is a hybrid drive?
A hybrid hard drive (SSHD) is a storage drive that combines the large storage capacity of an HDD, with the faster read/write speed of an SSD.
Two devices that use SD cards?
digital cameras, smartphones
Three types of optical drives?
. CD, DVD, and Blu-ray
What is a QR code?
a machine-readable code consisting of an array of black and white squares, typically used for storing URLs or other information for reading by the camera on a smartphone.
How does a QR code differ from a barcode?
QR codes can hold more data than barcodes.
