Life on earth Flashcards
Define the “population” in biological terms???
A group of organisms of the same species living in a specific area
Define the word “community” in biological terms???
All the different populations in a given area.
Define the word “habitat” in biological terms???
The environment where a particular organism lives
Define the word “ecosystem” in biological terms???
A community of organisms and their interactions with the environment.
Define the word “biodiversity “ in biological terms???
The variety of life in an ecosystem
What’s the purpose of a food chain???
A linear sequence showing who eats whom in an ecosystem.
What’s the purpose of a food web???
A complex network of interconnected food chains
What’s a producer???
An organism that can produce its own food (e.g., plants)
What’s a consumer???
An organism that eats other organisms for energy (e.g., herbivores, carnivores, omnivores)
What’s a decomposer???
An organism that breaks down dead matter (e.g., fungi, bacteria)
What’s a niche???
The role or function of an organism within an ecosystem. It includes the resources it uses and its interactions with other organisms
What’s a competition???
The struggle between organisms for resources like food, space, and mates. Competition can be intraspecific (within the same species) or interspecific (between different species).
What’s abiotic factors???
Non-living factors that affect the distribution of organisms.
What are some examples of abiotic factors???
Temperature, Light, Water, pH, Wind, Soil: These factors influence where organisms can thrive.
