- Less pronounced and more fluid but there are still social dimensions
- Now 8 social dimensions
- Social mobility can be achieved through sport, resulting in a release from poverty
How does gender effect participation in sport during the 21st century?
- Still difference in participation of men and women
- Certain activities are traditionally linked to either males or females and this can lead to discrimination
- More women are now involved in physical exercise and health and fitness activities
- Increase in female sport presenters in the media
How does law and order effect participation in sport during the 21st century?
- The rights of spectators and their safety
- Laws related to aggression by players on and off the pitch
- Laws to protect officials and referees
- Duty of care - Referees must exert adequate control
- Football banning orders- Stop football fans who are potential troublemakers from travelling abroad
- Law involved in misuse of drugs, misconduct on and off the field and ‘match fixing’
- Laws prevent discrimination on race and gender (rights of transsexuals- gender recognition Act)
- Discrimination legislation in UK covers (race, gender, disability, age, sexual orientation and religion)
How does education effect participation in sport during the 21st century?
- Children attend primary and then secondary school
- Compulsory PE
How does availability of time/money/transport effect participation in sport during the 21st century?
- Growing availability of time due to technological devices/advances and more flexible working conditions
- Games more affordable
What is globalisation in sport?
Process that involves sport as a world wide business and features corporate brands, media coverage and freedom of movement of sports participants, officials and spectators.
Example of globalisation
Globalisation of sporting brands e.g. the Nike swoosh is a logo that is universal.
What is ‘freedom of movement’?
People can freely move to play sport (by law) or spectate.
What is the ‘golden triangle’?
The term used to show the independence and influences of 2 factors of sport, sponsorship and the media - one aspect influences the other two and vice versa.
