A
- The pub was the centre of sporting activity for working class men
- Amateurism dominated by middle class e.g. rugby union.
- At start of century sport took place in drinking environment e.g. Horse racing/Boxing (upper class)
- Working men and women had less free time for sport compared to middle/upper class e.g. Golf
- Crowds at football were mainly working class

When football played on after the outbreak of war in 1914, reputation went downhill among middleclass who saw these events as too common and too associated with drinking and gambling.

A
- Physical education bought into schools as compulsory
- PE was part of every curriculum. Grammar schools copied public schools system and had sports teams and fixtures.

- Gradual increase in leisure time and money
- Men played and watched many sports
- More money for middle classes to take part in sport e.g. skiing
- Lots of space used for playing sport
- Sports facilities - greater opportunities for all classes to take part in sport

- Public and private transport became more available which meant more people could watch sport
