life cycle Flashcards
what does the life cycle show?
A life cycle shows how living things grow and change over time
how do most plant life cycles start?
seed
what are two ways an animal can be born
egg or live birth
which of these animals goes through metamorphasis during its life cycle? Penguin, chicken, gorilla, frog
frog
At what stage of a life cycle is the butterfly able to fly? Egg, Larva, Pupa, Adult?
Adult
How is a chicken born?
Mating and an egg
Do frogs start their life cycles on land or water?
water
stages of a frogs life cycle in order?
egg –> tadpole –> tadpole with legs and arms –> frog
Describe the metamorphasis a butterfly goes through over its lifetime.
egg—> caterpillar –>Chrystal stage –> butterfly
what type of food does a tree use to grow and what is it called?
Glucose - a type of sugar.
how do trees absorb water and minerals?
Through their roots
How do trees make glucose?
leaves.
How does the tree “eat”?
It sends glucose from the leaves to the other parts of the tree (trunk, branches, roots)
what is the recipe for photosynthesis?
Light (the sun), water (from the roots), carbon dioxide (from the air), Chlorophyll (from the cells of the green plants)
What is photosynthesis?
The process by which glucose sugar and oxygen is produced. Photosynthesis occurs when a tree uses the sunlight and chlorophyll to convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose.
what turns leaves green?
chlorophyll
why do trees change color in fall?
because there is less sunlight and water for photosynthesis.
True or False, a tree hibernates?
True, trees lose their leaves and store their food.
what are the only living organisms that can make their own food?
Plants
how do plants make their food?
by combining carbon dioxide gas in the air with water and nutrients that are absorbed in the soil using the energy they get from the sun- carbon dioxide and water react chemically to change into glucose and oxygen (photosynthesis)
Write out the equation for photosynthesis
carbon dioxide (CO2) + water (H20) ==> sunlight ==> glucose + Oxygen
where do plants store excesss glucose?
roots, stems and seeds of the plants
True or false: the plants energy is transferred to the animals that eat them
true
how do plants capture the suns energy?
because of chloroplasts on the leaves that contain chlorophyll. chlorophyll gives the leaves its green colour and is what is responsible for helping absorb solar energy
True or False- Plants continue to make energy at night.
false - when there is no light, plants stop making energy,
why are plants leaves broad and flat?
It is adapted to trap sunlight and carbon dioxide- a wide broad surface will capture far more light. (think solar panels)
how do plants get their minerals?
through the soil using their roots.
what will happen if the soil does not have enough nutrients?
the plant will not grow properly.
what do farmers add to the soil if it does not have enough nutrients?
fertilizer
why is photosynthesis one of the most important chemical reactions in the world?
1-it makes food for plants and animals and animals depend on them for food.
2-they breathe in carbon dioxide and release oxygen into the air for humans to breathe -otherwise we would suffocate
3- they remove carbon dioxide which is responsible for global warming
what are the stages of the life cycle of mammals?
Birth, growth, reproduction and death
what are the stages of the life cycle of living things that go through metamorphasis?
egg, larva, pupa (metamorphasis) and adult.
chicken
egg stage, chick stage, pullet stage and adult stage
