What is Christian Love?
Christian love refers to the goodwill, kindness, compassion and justice that a Christian offers to another, always seeking the good of the other. As it is based in the will and not the emotions, it is a different love from the emotional love that we feel for family and friends. Christians are not called to feel love for all people, but to choose to act in a compassionate and just way towards all.
What is the kingdom of God?
At the centre of the Jesus’ teaching was the kingdom of God - a kingdom in which God reigns in people’s hearts and lives. His teachings about the kingdom of God turns upside down all the notions that people have about power, about who is and who is not acceptable, and about who is worthy of our consideration.
What is human dignity?
Christians believe that people are made in the image and likeness of God and that the human person is at the centre of creation, and is the high point of God’s creation. Human dignity is the inestimable worth of every human being: something that cannot be lost or traded or taken away.
What is helping the poor and the oppressed?
Jesus was himself poor, and drew his friends from among the poorer classes of his society. He had a special compassion for the sick and the outcasts, teaching that the ones who inherit the kingdom of God are those who have cared for their brothers and sisters in need.
What is being a peacemaker?
A Christian moral teaching that goodwill and peacefulness should overcome violence, and that violence should not be repaid with violence.
Christ gave an example of mercy and forgiveness, and a commitment to peacefulness in life.
What commandment is at the heart of the life and teaching of Christ?
The commandment, ‘Love one another as I have loved you’ (John 12: 12), is at the heart of the life and teaching of Christ. It summarises the basic principle of moral life and how love takes in love even for one’s enemies.
