- They were similar to Qadariyyah + believed to evil to be MANS CREATION
- Believe they are given free will and exercise it
- Believe that Allah has NO PRIOR KNOWLEDGE of their acts
Summarise the Ashari view on life being a test:
- Believe everything has already been written by Allah on a tablet called “al-Lawhu L-Mahfuz
- This is because Allah is all knowing and knows what we’re gonna do
- We have a choice, but Allah already knows what that choice will be
- However, angel comes to your mums womb 120 days in, and decides your sex, life span, earning + whether you end up in hell/heaven
- Things like supplications + good deeds can change your destiny. (Allah already knows this)
Summarise beliefs of Moral test in this world + summarise sami and baseer:
- The world is neither a place of punishment, reward, place of entertainment, nor a battlefield, but it’s a place of TEST AND TRIAL
- Test of this life will continue until your last breath. And will find out whether you failed/succeeded after death
- If he regarded himself as the slave of ONE God, and worked in the way approved by God, and thought of the hereafter, he succeeded
- Sami (Hearing) + Baseer (Seeing). They imply being “sensible + Intelligent”.
One obtains knowledge from this and then makes conclusions from it - “We created man in order to try him, therefore, made him capable of hearing and seeing”
- Allah gave him knowledge + reason to enable him to take the test
Define Barzakh:
- A barrier from this world to the other world, before the day of resurrection.
Transitional stage between ones life in this world and the eternal life
- Can be a place of delights or it will be hellish, depending on how you lived your life.
“Behind them is a barrier (Barzakh) until the day of resurrection
What are the 3 things are left behind when you die?
- Family + wealth
- Body
- Your family
Summarise what happens in Barzakh:
- After you die you go into Barzakh + find whether you’re going hell/heaven
- At the time of Barzakh, Allah gives dead body the ability to hear + understand. This shows that at one point the people who cares about us will leave us.
- “The fire, they’re exposed to it, mornjng and afternoon”
Summarise the 2 types of punishment in the grave:
1) - Continuous type. Although punishment is continuous, it can be lessened.
Hadeeth of Abu Hurayah: People heads smashed with rocks + each time restored, they’d smash again.
2) Will last for a while, and then stop.
Punishment of sinners who’s sin isn’t that great.
Punishment may be stopped by dua, charity or Hajj done by other relatives
Summarise Heaven (Jannah) + The vision of God:
- Has 8 levels, they’re each built of different materials increasing value.
- Described as a garden with beautiful women, luscious fruits, flowing cups, rivers of milk.
- Deeds are written in a book which are kept in paradise along with a prototype of the Quran.
The “Kalam” (pen) which writes the deeds on a tablet.
- “white ones” ~ maidens in paradise.
- Person of Jannah will have 72 wives, which Allah created in Jannah (HURS)+ 2 human wives.
Human wives will have virtues over the hurs as they worshipped Allah in the world. - Paries ~ Sprits in bright array + beautiful to captivate heart of a man.
“And made them virgin, pure” - “the most acceptable of them with God shall look upon his face night and morning”
This is the reward to the pious.
Represent God as approving of his servants indulgence in them.
Summarise Hell (Jahanam) + it’s descriptions:
- Freqiently mentioned in Quran (77 times), could be because the prophet thought its useful to insist on it to work on the feelings of hearers.
- Has 7 dimensions: hottest is the gravest
- Fire to some of peoples ankles, collar bones, waist, knees.
“Water so boiling so that nothing will be available for refreshments” - 7 Gates of hell: When people arrive it’s gates will be opened, for a special class of sinners.
- All Muslims will go to hell, for those who don’t have great sins, it will be cool + pleasant.
- Those who devour property of orphans will eat up fire in their own bodies, mostly women will be in hell.
Summarise the length of punishment in hell + believers taken out of hell:
- “Even if the dwellers in hell may be numberless as the sands of the desert, a day will come when they will be taken out of it. “ - Umar
- “From every 1000, take out 999” (when Adam asks how many are the people of fire)
- God will remove and keep who he pleases.
- All believers will go to heaven
