What is monism?
The belief that the body and soul are united and are one. The soul is embodied.
What is dualism?
The belief that the body and soul are separate from each other. The soul is disembodied. It can survive without the physical body.
Problems with Christian beliefs about life after death
-diversity in interpretation + belief
-purgatory-how long? why? pay debt?
- non xians? - what happens? Other religions?
- control - punishment/reward - historical
- different ideas on paradise
- omnibenevolence → why is there punishment
- not all- forgiving?
- believe in God= go to heaven? Good person?
Positives about humanist view of life after death
- live full life
- etemity wouldn’t be enjoyed for long
-genuine, selfless goodness - greater meaning, life is going to end
Negatives about humanist view of life after death
-good deeds/ life leads to nothing
-meaningless, minimise achievements
-fear of death being the end, no hope
-pressure to make this life count, regret, guilt
-people don’t have the same opportunities in life
exclusivist view:
Only Christian’s go to heaven
Inclusive view:
Anyone who believes in god can go to heaven
Pluralist view:
Anyone who is morally good can go to heaven
What is a humanism?
Humanism is an approach to life that doesn’t believe in anything supernatural - tries to put humans at the centre of their morality and puts their trust in science for answers
What’s the universal view of life after death?
God loves us so everyone will go to heaven
What’s the annihilation view
If you die without turning to Christ you are simply destroyed
What does it mean to judge fairly
The right amount (of punishment/reward)
