Lids, Conjunctive and Cornea Flashcards
what does the conjunctiva cover?
its a thin vascular membrane that covers the inner surface of eyelids and loops back over sclera it doesn’t cover the cornea- would decrease transparency if it did
what are the two sets of muscles in eye? what do they do? what are they innervated by?
circular muscles - helps close eye (orbicularis occuli) - innervated by CN VII levator palpebrae superioris - elevates eyelid - innervated by CN III
what causes ptosis?
CN III dystrophy/paralysis
what causes inability to close eyelid?
CN VII palsy
what can inability to close eyelid lead to?
can lead to exposure keratopathy = drying and ulceration of cornea from exposure
what is collection of pus in eyelid called? what are the two types?
what is the treatment offered to hordeolum externum/internum? what causes this condition?
there are 2 glands that secrete oils in eyelid:
- sebacious glands of eyelashes (causes hordeolum externum)
- meibomian glands inside tarsal plate (causes hordeolum internum)
what cause the different types of hordeolum?
what is conjunctivitis? what are the signs and symptoms? what is the treatment?
what can cause viral conjunctivitis?
adenovirus
- usually lymph nodes in parotid region are inflammed or enlarged
what are the 2 types of pathology of the cornea? give examples
what is an advantage of corneal transplant?
