Extrinsic Eye Muscles Flashcards
what do extrinsic muscles of the eye do?
the 6 muscles in the orbit that move the eye as well as the levator palpabrae superioris that elevates the upper eyelid
what is intorsion?
when top of eyeball rotates towards nose
what is extorsion?
when top of eyeball rotates away from the nose
what eye movements can you not do voluntarily?
intorsion and extorsion
what is a mnemonic to remember muscle action of the eye?
RADSIN
what is the action of the individual EMOS influenced by?
- superior view of the orbital region - muscles are aligned to orbital axis and not the optical axis
- oblique muscles attach to the posterior part of sclera, superiorly and inferiorly but behind the equator of the eyeball
why do some EOMS have multiple actions?
because they do not coincide with the optical axis they have primary, secondary and tertiary action
- remember Recti ADducts, Superiors INtort (RADSIN)
what cranial nerves control what movements of the eye?
what is squint of the eye called?
strabismus
what is strabismus?
misalignment of eye
- Esotropia = conevrgent squint
- extropia = divergent squint
look at where the position of the dots of light are in the eye
what happens if you get strabiamus?
what is the name given to lazy eye?
amblyopia
what is the name given to double vision?
diplopia
what should you theink of when you see diplopia as a symptom?
sudden nerve palsy
