Liberal Feminism Flashcards
What do liberal feminists focus on?
Striving for legal equality between sexes.
What do liberal feminists say that other feminists don’t agree with?
Most of the battles for legal equality have been won and women’s oppression is gradually becoming overcome through the changes in people’s attitudes through the law. And so we are moving towards greater equality, but full equality depends on further reform and changes in attitudes.
What are some policies that have helped women to gain more equality in the family and society?
-marital rape act in 1991
-equal pay act in 1970
What are some evaluations of liberal feminism?
-Parson who is a functionalist would argue that the gender equality between men and women is not suitable, as men and women have roles that are biologically suited for them.
-other feminists have criticised them for failing to challenge the underlying cause of women’s oppression and for believing that changes in the law and in people’s attitudes will be enough for equality.
