Li et al (2013) Flashcards
What was the aim?
To investigate the effects of high and low quality day care in two age groups: infant toddler and pre school.
What did Li et al look at?
How cognitive, language and pre academic skills were impacted and the different combinations of high and low quality daycare at different ages.
How many participants were there?
1364 families with newborn babies born in 1991 from different states.
How did they make the study more generalisable?
They used a variety of ethnicities, races and socioeconomic status’.
Who did they exclude from the study?
Teenage mothers, children with disabilities, families leaving the area and mothers without good english
How was the study designed? (design, where was the sample from)
As a longitudinal study that used observations and interviews, questionnaires and child assessments from NICHD study.
What is a strength of Li et al (2013)? (hint: good sample!)
A strength of Li et al (2013) is that it used a broad and large data set.
Li et al used secondary data from the NICHD study which used over 1000 families.
This meant that they were able to even out abnormalities as the data set was so large - thus giving the study high generalisability.
What is an application of Li et al (2013)? (hint: daycare earlier or later?)
An application of Li et al (2013) is that it shows the best way to invest in daycare.
The question of whether it is better to invest in high quality daycare earlier or later is better. Li et al’s findings suggest that earlier is better for brain development.
This is an important application as it shows how both parents and governments should invest into daycare for children.
