Day Care Flashcards
What is daycare?
Daycare is a form of temporary care, not given by family members or someone well known to the child. it is sometimes referred to as ‘non-parental care’.
What did the NICHD do?
It was a longitudinal study to study different aspects of child development using over 1000 children from diverse families and locations.
What did the NICHD study find?
Adults who were asked to rate the children rated them as aggressive disobedient and assertive.
Children in full-time daycare were close to three-times more likely to show behavioural problems than those cared for by their mother.
What do the findings from the NICHD study show?
They show that the more time children spent in daycare the more aggressive and disobedient they would become.
What did Belsky and Rovine do?
They investigated the negative effects on peer relations. They used the strange situation on children who had spent 20 hours or more in daycare per week before they were one year old.
What did Belsky and Rovine find?
These children were more likely to be insecurely attached compared with children at home.
What conclusions can we draw from the findings of Belsky and Rovine’s study?
That Children in daycare are more likely to be insecurely attached and therefore less successful in peer relations.
What did the EPPE do?
They looked into the positive effects of daycare. They followed the development of 3000 children in various pre-school educational settings in the UK.
What did the EPPE find?
This study found increased independence and sociability in children who attended daycare.
