Explain same sex marriage laws in Argentina
2007 - 75% in Buenos Aires think it should be legal, 66% total
2009 - Court ruled prohibiting same sex marriage as unconstitutional - permitted a male couple to marry - first in LA
Initially suspended after a judge revoked the decision, they were later allowed to marry in December in Tierra Del Fuego- other couples had to have their refusal deemed unconstitutional then married there
First LGBT law proposed in 2007, failed but gained attention
2 bills proposed in 2009, later legalised on July 15th 2010
Same rights given as other married couples, eg adoption
2nd in Latin America and 10th globally
More secular for the region 22% regularly attend church - less influenced by catholic ideologies
What policy failures occurred in Argentina
2010 - anti discrimination law amendment approved by the chamber but never voted on by the senate
2015 - anti discrimination law introduced to the national congress by a LGBT group, however debate was stalled and never occurred

Grupo gay da Bahia (GCB)
Influenced passing of same sexual marriage through presenting and pushing policies
What were the three objectives of the GCB
Defend full citizenship rights for all LGBT people
Denouncing and fighting all forms of homophobia and sexual discrimination
Spread accurate information about homosexuality- put an end to ignorance and conspiracy of silence against “the love that dare not speak its name”
To promote awareness amongst the greatest number of LGBT community members to fight for their full civil rights and give information and support regarding safe sex, STDs and AIDS
What LGBT related laws have been introduced in Brazil
2013- same sex marriage legalised and given adoption rights passed by 14-1 vote
2018- Supreme Court rules transgender people can legally change their gender without surgery, hormone replacement or psychiatric diagnosis
2018- Supreme Court removed a law in a state prohibiting teaching gender and sexuality courses in schools
How accepted is homosexuality in Brazil
74% think homosexuality should be accepted, up from 64% in 2014
Highest number of LGBT murder rate - 380 in 2017 - same year it has the highest total homicide rate in history
Catholic Church opposed legalisation of same sex marriage
High levels of bullying amongst youths
