Word class:
Shows actions, events or states of being, feeling or thinking. E.g. Seems
Verb
Word class:
Names of objects, feelings, attitudes, people or places. E.g. Cottage
Noun
Word class:
Adds detail to nouns. E.g. Bleak
Adjective
Word class:
Adds details to verbs or other adverbs. E.g. Extraordinarily
Adverb
Word class:
Positioned in front of nouns to add detail or to clarify. E.g. The, a, an
Determiner
Lexis
The method that deals with the vocabulary system of a language
Semantics
The method that deals with meaning and how that is generated within texts
Textual cohesion
The term used to describe how a text is logically structured to create a coherent sense of meaning
Conjuction
Links words, phrases and clauses together. E.g. And, but, or
Preposition
Shows relation in terms of time or place. E.g. In, at, by
Pronoun
Replaces nouns and can also refer forwards and backwards to them in longer stretches of text. E.g. I, me, you

Personal
I, you, she, they

Possesive
My, his, our, their

Reflexive
Myself, himself, themselves
Classification of pronouns:
Relative
Who, whom, which
Subject pronoun
A pronoun that usually occurs as the actor in a verbal process
Object pronoun
A pronoun that usually appears as being affected by a verb process
Lexical words
Words that carry explicit meanings and represent the word classes that are open to new additions and derivations
Functional words
Words that have less explicit meaning and serve to highlight relationships between other words
Classification of nouns:
Proper
Refers to names of people or places. E.g. London, Paris
Classification of nouns:
Abstract
Refers to states, feelings and concepts that have no physical existence. E.g. Pain, happiness
Classification of nouns:
Concrete
Refers to objects that have physical existence.
E.g.
Countable: Table
Non-countable: Furniture
