lexical development Flashcards
what is morphological development
occurs at this stage, children apply patterns of inflection to irregular nouns. When children begin to utter their first words, between 12 and 18 months of age, they develop an expressive vocabulary of approximately fifty to 100 words. when their average expressive vocabulary increases as they begin to use some verbs and adjectives.
* between 2 and 3 years old, children begin to use pronouns and contractions, and start to use adverbs of location (e.g. here and there)
* between 3 and 4 years old, they consistently use contractions and pronouns, and start to use reflexive pronouns.
* between 4 and 5 years old, sophisticated conjucntions such as (‘when’, ‘so’ and ‘if’) are used. conciding with their curiosity about new concepts in the world around them, children also ask questions using ‘why’, ‘when’ and ‘how’
* by the time they are 7, children can draw on a well-developed lexicon that allows them to use language at a higher level. They make jokes, argue, explain and can talk about past events in detail
what is semantic overgeneralisation
where children extend word meaning or grammaticial rules beyond their normal use e.g. (mu), ‘moon’, half eaten cakes + bananas.
what is semantic undergeneralisation
where children use a word to refer to a smaller catergory of things than adults to e.g. might refer only to their family pet as ‘dog’ and not to other dogs they see.
