molecular- tells the ratio of the elements in a compound (covalent compound)
empirical- tells the ratio of the elements in a compound (ionic mainly, also covalent)
structural formula- pictures of where all the atoms are; allow us to predict how molecules behave; includes Lewis structures
special rules for oe-
Be = 2 oe- H = 2 oe- B = 6 oe-
acids with oxygen
(prefix based on anion) + (suffix: if ate then ic, if ite then ous) acid
acids without oxygen
(hydro) + (something I think based on cation) acid

how to find the charge of an atom in a compound
determine the # of e- that the atom of interest owns (1 per bond, 2 per lone pair)and plug into the equation:
charge on atom= ve - #owned when bonded
