Chpt. 3, Elements and Properties Flashcards
chemical properties
properties that describe whether something will undergo a particular chemical reaction; flammability is one example
physical properties
any property that is not a chemical property; examples include melting/boiling point, color, mass, and density
intensive properties
properties that don’t depend on the amount of material present
extensive properties
properties that depend on the amount of material present
solids
the hard state of matter
liquids
the fluid-like and shapeless state of matter
gases
the gas-like state of matter that is shapeless, and that is usually not visible
plasmas
gases that have lost their electrons
chemical change
when one substance is changed into another by making or breaking chemical bonds
physical change
changes that occur when the form of something is changed
The Law of Conservation of Mass
states that the products of a chemical reaction will weigh the same as the reactants
heterogeneous mixture
a mixture in which not all elements are uniform
homogeneous mixture
mixtures in which things have mixed in a completely uniform fashion (also known as solutions)
methods to separate the elements of a mixture
filtering, distillation, crystallization (getting a crystal to solidify from a solution, using a variety of different means)
element
a pure substance that can only make one type of atom
