Levers Flashcards
What is meant by the word ‘lever?’
Lever is a rigid bar that turns about an axis to create movement. All levers contain a fulcrum, load and effort.
What is a fulcrum?
The fixed point at which a lever turns or is supported. It can also be referred to as the ‘axis.’
What is meant by ‘load?’
Load is the weight or ‘resistance’ that the lever must ove.
What is meant by the word ‘effort?’
Effort is the force required to move the load. It can also be referred to as ‘force.’
What is meant by the phrase ‘load arms?’
Load arms is the distance from the load to the fulcrum.
What is meant by the phrase ‘effort arm?’
Effort arm is the distance from the effort to the fulcrum.
What is a mechanical advantage?
Mechanical advantage measure the efficiency of a lever.
How is mechanical advantage calculated?
Mechanical advantage = effort arm (divided by) load (resistance) arm.
