What is Arousal?
Arousal is a physical and mental (psychological and physiological) state of alertness/readiness,varying from deep sleep to intense excitement or alertness.
What does the ‘inverted-U’ state?
The inverted-U states that an optimal performance occurs when a performer reaches an optimal level of arousal.
How does Gross Movement Skills link to arousal?
Gross Movement skills require higher level of arousal. The mind and body need to be very alert to ensure that the strength,endurance and speed required to perform gross skills is available.
How does Fine Movement Skills link to arousal?
Fine Movement skills require lower levels of arousal. The mind and body need to be calm to ensure that the coordination and concertation required to perform the small,precise movements.
What are the 3 main ways to manage arousal using stress management techniques?
- Deep Breathing
- Mental rehearsal,visualisation and imagery
- Positive self-talk
What is deep breathing?
Deep breathing is taking slow,deep breaths whilst relaxed.
What is mental rehearsal, visualisation and imagery?
They are cognitive relaxation techniques involving control of mental thoughts and imagining positive outcomes.
What is positive self-talk?
Positive self-talk is a cognitive relaxation technique involving developing positive thoughts about your performance.
