Lever Systems Flashcards
State the three types of lever systems
First class lever
Second class lever
Third class lever
What are the three key elements of lever systems
The Fulcrum
the Effort
The Load
Where are the three elements in a first class lever system
The Fulcrum is in the middle with both the Effort and Load/resistance pushing down on opposite sides
Where are the three elements in a second class lever system
The fulcrum is on the left with the load/resistance pushing down in the middle and the effort pushing up on the right
Where are the three elements in a third class lever system
The fulcrum is on the right with the effort pushing up in the middle and the load/resistance pushing down on the left
What is the Fulcrum
A fixed pivot point
What is the effort
The source of energy that will do the work
What is the load
The weight/resistance to be moved
Give an example of a First class lever system in the body
The neck
the Fulcrum is the atlas and axis joint at the top of the neck with the load being the weight of the head and the effort being the neck muscles contracting to lift the head.
Give an example of a Second class lever system in the body
The lower leg with the ankle
The fulcrum is the ball of your foot when the load is your body weight, the effort is the contraction of your gastronemious to lift up on your toes.
Give an example of a Third class lever system in the body
The arm
The fulcrum is the elbow joint with the load being somthing in the hand (like a dumbell), and the effort is the bicep contracting
