LEVELS OF ORGANIZATION Flashcards
Types of cell accdg. to their number
UNICELLULAR, MULTICELLULAR
Levels of Organization (in order)
Cells Tissues Organs Organ Systems Organism
What is the basic unit of life?
CELLS
Serves as the boundary between the cell and environment; contains proteins embedded w/in its phospholipid layers
PLASMA MEMBRANE
Jelly-like fluid inside the cell that surrounds the nucleus
CYTOPLASM
Command center of the cell; is 4 layers thick; contains the DNA
Nucleus
What’s inside the nucleus?
Nucleolus
Protein synthesis factories; contains RNA
RIBOSOMES
Powerhouse of the cell; site of aerobic respiration
MITOCHONDRIA
What are the foldings of the mitochondria called?
CRISTAE
Bilayer of lipids used for transport
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
2 kinds of ER
ROUGH and SMOOTH ER
Difference between smooth and rough er
SMOOTH - doesnt have ribosomes attached and are known to produce lipids
ROUGH - have ribosomes attached and synthesize protein and lipids and transport
Packaging factory of the cell; series of flattened closely stacked membranous sacs
GOLGI APPARATUS
Stomachs of the cell and bud off the golgi bodies as the cell needs; called suicide sacs
LYSOSOMES
Only found in plant cells and are made of bulk of fiber in diet
CELL WALL
it maintains the cell shape and is fibrous
CYTOSKELETON
Group of cells
TISSUES
4 types of tissues
EPITHELIAL, CONNECTIVE, MUSCLE, NERVE
What are EPITHELIAL TISSUES?
Provide coverage for the skin and covers the inside and outside of the body
What are MUSCLE TISSUES?
It contracts, shortens, and is responsible for the movement
3 Kinds of muscle tissues
SKELETAL
CARDIAC
SMOOTH
It supports other tissues and binds them together
CONNECTIVE TISSUE
What do connective tissues bind together?
BONES AND VEINS
