LEVELS OF ORGANIZAITON Flashcards
ATOM
Smallest unit of matter
Molecule
Contain at least two atoms held together by chemical bonds.
Macromolecule
Large molecules also known as polymers that are typically formed by combining smaller units called monomers. (Amino acids combine to form proteins, nucleotides combine to form nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA)
Organelle
Structures inside cells (membrane bound organelles are only found in eukaryotic cells that contain a nucleus). - Examples include mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, golgi complex, lysosomes, chloroplasts (in plants), and others.
Cells
- Prokaryotic Cells - no nucleus or other membrane bound organelles, (bacteria and archaea)
- Eukaryotic Cells - Have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles
Tissues
Group of similar cells carrying out related functions.
1. Human body: epithelial, connective, muscular, nervous.
Organs
Collection of related tissue.
Organ System
Functionally related interacting organs.
Organism
Individual living entity
Population
All individuals or a species living within a specific area.
Community
Populations inhabiting a particular area.
ECOSYSTEM
All living things in a particular area together with the abiotic (nonliving) parts of the environment, also called biome and often named f or predominant plant life. ex: forest, desert, grassland.
BIOSPHERE
All the ecosystems on Earth.
