LEVEL 1
POSITION: Rights
- People follow you because they have to
- Starting level for every level of leadership
Upside of position (level 1)
- They have leadership potential
- Authority is recognized
- Opportunity to grow as a leader
- Allows potential leaders to shape and define their leadership
Downside of Position
level 1
- Leaders who rely on position can often devalue people
- feed on politics
- often lonely
- positional leaders receive people’s leas, not their best
LEVEL 2
PERMISSION: Relationships
- People follow you because they want to
- You can’t lead people until you like people
Upside of Permission (level 2)
- makes work more enjoyable
- brings up energy levels
- communication is easier
- focuses on the value of each person
- nurtures trust
Downside of Permission (level 2)
- Appears to soft for some people
- Leaders can be taken advantage of
- Requires openness to be effective
- difficult for people who aren’t naturally likeable
Four types of people (level 2)
Takers- those who use the relationship to better themselves
Developers- use the relationship for you and others
Acquaintances- those who live off their relationship with you
Friends- those who enjoy their relationship with you
LEVEL 3
PRODUCTION:Results
- People follow you for what you have done for the organization
- separates a true leader from one who merely fills a position
Upside of production (level 3)
- gives the leader credability
- sets the standard for others to follow
- brings clarity and reality to vision
- solves a multitude of problems
- gives momentum
- foundation for team-building
Downside of production (level 3)
-being productive can make you think you’re a leader when you’re not
-feel a heavy weight of responsibility
-have to make difficult decisions

LEVEL 4
PEOPLE DEVELOPMENT: Reproduction
- People follow you because of what you’ve done for them
- Shift from production to others reaching their potential
Upside of people development (level 4)
- empowers others to fulfil their leadership responsibilities
- empowers leaders to lead larger
- great personal fulfilment
Downside of people development (level 4)
- self centeredness cause leaders to neglect people development
- insecurity
- short sidedness can stop seeing the need for people development
- lack of commitment
LEVEL 5
PINNACLE
RESPECT: People follow you for who you are and what you represent
-legacy of leadership within their organization
Upside of Pinnacle (level 5)
- creates a legacy within the organization
- provides an extended platform for leading
