Levels of an Organism Flashcards
What are the five levels of an organism?
- Cell
- Tissue
- Organ
- Organ System
- Organism
What is a Cell?
A cell is the most basic structural and functional unit of life. All organisms are made up of cells.
What are some examples of cells?
Skin cells, nerve cells, muscle cells, blood cells, sperm/ovum cells.
What is a tissue?
A tissue is a group of cells that are similar in structure and perform similar functions.
What are the four main types of tissues?
- Epithelial Tissues
- Muscle Tissues
- Connective Tissues
- Nerve Tissues
What is the function of Epithelial tissue?
Epithelial tissue refers to a group of cells that covers the exterior surfaces of the body. It lines the internals cavities and passageways and form certain glands.
What is the function of Muscle tissue?
This group of cells can forcefully contract and relax to produce movement.
What is the function of Connective tissue?
Connective tissues bind the cells and organs of the body together.
What is the function of nerve tissues?
The nervous tissues emit electrical pulses that coordinate the body’s functions.
What is an Organ?
Organs are the body’s structures, made up of many cells and tissues that coordinate functions to perform a specific function.
What are the five main organs?
Brain, Kidneys, Heart, Lungs, and Liver
What is an Organ System?
An organ system are made up of related organs that cooperate to form whole systems.
What are the body’s systems?
Integumentary System, Skeletal System, Muscular System, Nervous System, Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System, Lymphatic System, Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary System, and Reproductive System
What is an organism?
An organism is the coordinated function of cells.
What is a unicellular organism?
An organism made up of only one cell. E.g. protists
