level of measurement n sign test Flashcards
1
Q
nominal data
A
- level of measurement where the data r in separate categories
- Discrete data
- Gives no information about the individual, it will only tell you how many r in each category
- eg type of movie-horror, drama etc. can be classified in categories w/out any specific order/ranking. doesnt have a numerical value associated w it
- eg hair colour
2
Q
ordinal data
A
- Ordinal data involves ordering or ranking variables
- eg, in terms of higher and lower
- It can be subjective such as ratings on a self-report measure
- It doesnt say anything about the distance between positions in the order
- eg evaluations of service received at a restaurant. responses can be ranked/ ordered based on their quality, indicating a clear hierarchy. but, intervals between categories= not equal, n theres no true zero point.
- eg size of popcorn
3
Q
interval data
A
- Interval numbers are in order n the intervals or gaps between them are of equal sizes
- There is no absolute zero point, only a convenient zero
- eg calendar years- equal values between values n no true zero
- eg temperature
4
Q
not needed?????
ratio data
A
- measure along a numerical scale that has equal distances between adjacent values n true zero
5
Q
the sign test
A
- done when study is looking for a difference n design is related eg repeated measures
- normally conducted when data is nominal but may be interval ordinal
6
Q
steps of a sign test
A
- decide if theres been an increase, decrease or response/score=same
- add up pulses n minuses to work out the calculated/observed value which=least frequent sign
- Compare the calculated/ observed value to the critical value using Table 5. N is the number of participants, but any responses that are the same are ignore
1. v
2. calculating ur s value
3. hypothesis
4. compare in critical values table
