Types of crossing:
- Automatic barrier crossing
- Manned crossing with automatic barrier (MCB) must observe full lowering sequence when the barriers are lowered manually
- Close circuit TV crossing
- CCTV, signaller must observe were possible the barriers lowering
What must you do on lowering barriers
- Figure of 8 sweep
- Blind spots
User work crossing receive call, what information do you need & what action might you need to take depending on what needs to cross?
- Which crossing
- What’s required to cross
- How long will it take
- 3m or over, make the railway safe with signals
Large vehicles, small wheels, animals, what must you do?
- Find out how long
- Make sure there is enough time
- Make sure protecting signals are placed to danger
- Make sure any approaching train has passed the crossing
- Tell the user to report back when the crossing is clear
Not able to hear/understand a caller, what action do you need to take?
Caution driver of each train until you are sure crossing is safe.
Any crossing that takes 3 minutes or more shall be treated as:
A large, low, slow vehicle.
What records for crossings:
- Name of crossing
- Time and nature of request
- How long they say it will be
- Time you give permission to cross
- Time movement reported clear
User does not report back
Approach crossing at caution
Do not pass over crossing until driver has made sure it is safe
Driver to inform if the crossing is safe
IF vehicle gate left open
Arrange for them to be closed, tell driver to approach at caution. Do not pass until driver thinks safe, tell you when the gates are crossed

Crossing temporarily secured out of use, is there another way of communication to allow the crossing to be used safely?
