When spelling /g/ and a watch out vowel, put…
GU followed by a vowel = /gw/ Guam
Only way to spell /gw/ is GU.
when spelling /g/ + e, i, y put a GU: guess, guide, guy
GU = /gw/ as in Guam in borrowed words
GU = /g/ as in “guess” in American words
British English rules
-or –> -our (labour)
-ize –> -ise suffix (economise)

vowel before gn wil always be…
wr- = /r/ wrist
gh- = /g/ ghost
kn- = /n/ knee
gn- = /n/ gnat
-gn = /n/ sign
Look it up using the modern spelling.
Watch for confusables (wrung/rung).
Vowel before gn will always be LONG (sign, campaign)

ch = /k/ chemistry

sc- = /s/ before e, i, y
ps- = /s/ psychology

Watch out for confusables (him, hymn)
Fatigue
Only way to spell /eeg/ at the end…
-gue after short-o…
Before GUE:
i will say…
a will say…
o will say…

-gue at the end of French words = /g/ as in fatigue
Only way to spell /eeg/ at the end is -igue.
-gue after short-o can be shortened to -g (prologue, prolog)
Before GUE:

a will say /ay/

in French words, CH = /sh/ chef
Look it up using the American Spelling SH
Police
in French words, -i_e = /ee/ police
Look it up using the American Spelling EE
Antique
in French words, -que = /k/ antique
Look it up using the American Spelling CK/K
Corsage
Only French words end with /ozh/ so no need to look it up.
Deluxe
silent-e on the end of a French word is sometimes just “being French” deluxe. Look it up if you’re not sure.
