What is the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974?

A

The main UK legislation that regulates Health & Safety in the workplace.

The Act aims to:

  • secure H&S for people at work;
  • protect others against risks arising from work activities
  • control of dangerous substances

This places a statutory duty on all Employers to:

  • provide a safe working environment;
  • safe systems of work;
  • safe equipment to work with;
  • ensuring staff are competent

Employers with more than 5 staff to have health and safety procedures in place.

A

  • to ensure that H&S are properly considered during a projects’ development.;
  • reducing the risk of harm when building.

  • Domestic Clients also need to comply to the CDM regulations, but duties can be passed on to a Contractor;

Introduced to reduce the number of accidents on construction sites.

The scheme is run by Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) & indicate a basic awareness of health & safety.
