Q

How do you access the tool settings when you’re sculpting?

A

Right click one of the buttons in the toolbar top left, and click ‘show tool settings’.

38
Q

How do you change the action of the sculpting brush to push rather than pull?

A

Hold down control

39
Q

What do you do when you want to add more detail?

A

Add another subsurf modifier

40
Q

What’s the shortcut for controlling the strength of a sculpting brush?

A

shift+F

41
Q

If you go too crazy on your doughnut with the sculpting brush, what can you do?

A

use the smooth brush to smooth it back out

42
Q

What do you have to do after creating a modifier?

A

‘apply’ it by using the option in the dropdown menu.

43
Q

What do you need to do before doing sculpting work on the icing?

A

un-hide the hidden vertices. Because it might cause problems later.

44
Q

What’s the hotkey for switching modes?

A

Z

45
Q

How do you turn on the 3D cursor?

A

Click on the little dropdown menu called ‘overlays’ at the top and click the 3D cursor checkbox

46
Q

How do you move the 3D cursor?

A

Shift + Right click

47
Q

Why is the 3D cursor important?

A

That’s where new objects get dropped. It’s also an option for the pivot point.

48
Q

What’s the hotkey for centring the 3D cursor in the middle of the grid floor?

A

Shift + C

49
Q

How do you parent things?

A

Select the child, then shift select the parent, then control + P and Object (keep transform)

50
Q

What’s the difference between Eevee and Cycles?

A

Eevee - it’s very fast but simple. Good for a TV show or something you need to get done quickly. You’ve got to work with light and shadow to make it look right.

51
Q

How do you look through the camera in render mode?

A

Click the little camera icon top right

52
Q

When looking through the camera, what’s the hotkey for moving the camera around?

A

G

53
Q

How do you zoom?

A

Control+2 fingers

54
Q

What’s the shortcut for camera view?

A

0

55
Q

What’s an alternative way to control the camera?

A

Press N to go to the N panel, and lock the camera to view.

56
Q

What’s the shortcut for moving the camera to the current view?

A

Ctrl+Alt+Numpad 0

57
Q

How do you activate the pivot point menu?

A

The . key

58
Q

What’s the probable reason for the colours not showing up in the viewport?

A

You’re in solid mode. Look at the icons at the top right.

59
Q

What’s the difference between shift, control and alt?

A

Control - sending controls to the terminal. Alt - alternative, so an alternative to an existing thing. Shift - I dunno. It makes shortcuts.

60
Q

What’s the key (on my keyboard at least) to look at the current object?

A

/

61
Q

How do you get rid of the right-angle on the edge of the icing?

A

Reorder the modifiers so that the subsurf modifier comes after the solidy modifer

62
Q

In the material properties, how many do even experienced blenders not even touch?

A

Most of them.

63
Q

What does the roughness material property do?

A

Affects the reflectivity of the surface.

64
Q

What do a lot of people (especially beginners) think is the way to change reflectivity?

A

Change the specular value. But that’s just overriding the actual physical properties in the real world. Because every object in the real world actually has reflectivity. It’s just that the surface is so rough in some instances that you can’t see it.

65
Q

What does the ‘normal’ value in material properties do?

A

It’s the bump - if you need a bumpy surface. But you need something to plug into it.

66
Q

What are the three material properties that you change a lot?

A

Base colour
Roughness
Normal value

67
Q

What’s the ‘special’ material property you need to alter with the icing? And why?

A

Subsurface scatter.
Light’s not just hitting the icing and bouncing off. Is entering the material and bouncing around inside. Similar to human skin.

68
Q

What kind of objects generally have subsurface scatter?

A

Humans, some natural materials, food.

69
Q

What’s subsurface radius? And what’s the value for icing?

A

It’s how far the light bounces around inside the object.

0.25/0.15/0.15

70
Q

What colour do you set the subsurface colour on the icing?

A

If the icing is pink, a slightly red pink. Like shocking pink if the icing colour is pastel pink.

Apparently there’s very little info online about subsurface colour but that’s what the guy figured looks most right.

71
Q

What happens if you over do the subsurface radius settings?

A

The icing looks waxy or off somehow.

72
Q

What does the overlays letting do at the top?

A

Puts a line around the current selection.

Useful for knowing what’s selected right now, but can get in the way.

73
Q

What subsurface value do you use for the bread material in the doughnut?

A

About 3. Bread has a tiny bit of subsurf.

74
Q

How do you do split view?

A

Go to the border, right click and go to solid horizontally or split vertically

75
Q

What do you do if shadows are too hard (like sunlight)?

A

Increase the size of the light source.

76
Q

How do you find the correct light value that you should be using (brightness)?

A

Under render settings/colour management/view transform/false colour. You want things to be just on grey or above grey. Focus on like the corner of the icing. Can be a little overexposed (green) but not too much. Can control with the lamp power.

(12:52) on materials vid

P.S.He’s got a device called a spider which makes his monitor more accurate.

77
Q

How does changing the rendering samples affect the render time?

A

It’s linear: doubling the samples would double the render time.

(Scene/sampling/render)

78
Q

Tell me about noise.

A

Whatever render sampling value you use, there will always be noise. You can use a de-noiser after rendering to get rid of noise. It’s built into blender.

79
Q

Hope do you activate the de-noisier?

A

(with engine switches to cycles) View Layer Properties tab/passes/data/denoising data(on)

80
Q

How do you access the compositor?

A

Compositor tab along the top.

81
Q

What does the compositor do?

A

Shows everything that happens to your render after the render is finished. You. Can add nodes that add glow, glare, colour grading, all sorts of things.

82
Q

How do you add and set up a denoiser node in the compositor?

A

Shift A/ search for denoise/ click to add.
Connect the image render node noisy image output and connect to the image input of the denoise node.
Denoising normal>normal
Donoising albeto > albeto
Denoise image output > composite image input

83
Q

Why won’t changes to the composite section affect the render?

A

You have to be using the compositor when the render is generated.

If you don’t want to have to do another render, go to the bottom and set it to live view, click the little picture and set it to render result, disconnect and reconnect a node, then ctrl space will maximise the view. Dunno why this is easier than doing another render.

84
Q

Are modifier settings flexible? As in, can you go back and change the settings of a modifier later?

A

Yes. (maybe just until I apply it, at which point it disappears and becomes a permanent feature of the mesh. Not sure though.

85
Q

What do you adjust on the solidify modifier settings on the icing?

A

thickness, and offset. and crease I think (later)

86
Q

What do you to before you start making drips on the icing?

A

Hide the solidify modifier in edit mode (just the third box) so that you can see what you’re doing in edit mode, but it’s still visible in object mode and rendering mode.

87
Q

How do you enable symmetry when sculpting?

A

Click on the X or Y or Z in the top right.

88
Q

How do you reference more than one object when creating particles?

A

Reference a collection rather than an object. Simply put the objects you want to reference into the same collection.

89
Q

What’s the shortcut to create a loopcut?

A

control + R (scroll to increase the loops, click, then hover to place). Just have to have the object in edit mode, don’t have to select vertices. Can also create vertical ones - try hovering your mouse over the vertices at the top and bottom.

90
Q

Where do the sprinkles stick themselves to the icing?

A

at the origin points
