Leukocyte Analysis Flashcards
What is blood composed of?
Plasma
Red blood cells
White blood cells
Platelets
What cells are part of the white blood cell family?
5
Neutrophils Eosinophils Basophils Lymphocytes Monocytes
What is a low level of neutrophils in the blood called?
Neutropenia
What is neutropenia?
A low level of neutrophils in the blood
How does one obtain a blood sample to create a blood smear?
The blood needs to be collected in tubes containing heparin
What is heparin?
An anticoagulant
Why is heparin used?
This prevents clots from forming which would prevent leukocyte analysis
How are blood smears fixed and stained?
Blood smears are fixed in methanol then stained with eosin and then methylene blue
How do you identify a neutrophil?
2-5 lobes
Neutral granules
How do you identify an eosinophil?
2 lobes Red granules (eosin)
How do you identify a basophil?
2 lobes
blue/purple granules (haematoxylin)
How do you identify a lymphocyte?
No lobes
Large nucleus
Very little visible cytoplasm
How do you identify a monocyte?
No lobes
Large, kidney bean shaped nucleus
No granules , faint stain
What is the role of neutrophils?
Phagocytosis
What is the role of eosinophils?
Kill parasites
