Lessons 6-10 Flashcards
Statement
a sentence that has truth value, it is true or false
non-statement
question, command, nonsense
self supporting statement
statement about one’s own thoughts or beliefs
a statement whose truth value can be determined from the statement itself
3 categories of self-supporting
- T/F by logical structure
- T/F by definition
- Self supporting statement
T/F by logical structure
tautology
self-contradiction
tautology
P or not P
true by logical because it covers all the bases
My eyes are blue or my eyes are not blue
self-contradiction
P and not P
statement is always false because of its logical structure
My eyes are blue and my eyes are not blue
T/F by definition
All triangles have 3 sides
This triangle is an octagon
supported statement
need outside information a statement whose truth value depends on evidence or information from outside itself 1. Authority 2. Experience 3. Deduction
3 sources of information for supported statements
- Authority
- Experience
- Deduction
4 relationships between statements
- consistency
- implication
- logical equivalence
- independence
consistent statements
two statements are consistent if they can both be true at the same time…no conflict
statements related by implication
two statements are related by implication if the truth of one requires the truth of the other.
Some S is P does not imply some P is S…only goes in one direction
logically equivalent statements
The statements imply each other.
both statements must be true or both must be false
independent statements
The truth values have no effect on each other
