3 steps to change statements into standard
categorical form
1) identify and write entire SUBJECT (noun with modifiers)
2) choose the proper “TO BE” VERB (right number and tense)
3) rewrite the entire predicate as a PREDICATE NOMINATIVE (noun with modifiers)
categorical statements
statements which affirm or deny something about a given subject
subject in a categorical statement
the term being described, or about which something is asserted
predicate in a categorical statement
the term that describes or asserts something about the subject
quantity of a statement
the scope of a statement’s claim about the extension of the subject ~ either
UNIVERSAL (All or No) or PARTICULAR (Some or Some…not)
quality of a statement
the positive or negative nature of a statement’s claim about the subject
~ either AFFIRMATIVE (asserts something) or NEGATIVE (denies something)
