2 sociologist definitions of globalisation (Harvey and Giddens)
harvey: space and time compression occurs whereby instant interaction gets rid of distance between people and swaps out digital space to virtual space
Giddens: intensification of worldwide social relations leads to local happenings shaped by events occuring many miles away
4 problems of defining globalisation
1) results in cultural homogenisation
2) involves variety of political, economic and other changes that aren’t in sync
3) some see themselves as British rather than part of global digital world
4) globalisation is faster in west, leading to inequality
